To see a much more detailed map click here. The map is big, so you may have to scroll around to see all of it. Granite itself is a great spot for eastbounds, because from here you can see them as they take a sweeping curve off of a big fill. Now turn left on Granite Kelso Cutoff and head back to US 95. After turning south continue until you are climbing a hill, then take a right onto Homestead Road. Right after you cross the tracks take a left onto the dirt road where you can park. From here you can see way down an enormous cut which makes a great photo for eastbounds. If you want you can continue driving up the road, and you will soon reach the top of the cut. From here it is a superb westbound photo as they sweep around yet another curve. This little road runs along the top of the cut all the way to the other end before dropping down into the town of Athol. This road can be very rough and extremely muddy if it has been raining though. If you go back to Hwy 95, Athol is just 2 miles farther down. From here you can take a right at the stoplight onto Grove Ave and then a left just before the tracks on Old Hwy 95. The little town of Athol is a nice spot for trains, and you can get several tall hills in the background of westbounds. Several miles down Old Hwy 95, the UP ducks under both the road and BNSF's tracks. If you are really lucky you could get an under/over shot from here. This location is a nice shot for afternoon westbounds. Just around the corner at New Athol, the tracks go back down to one track. This is a nice spot for either direction. From here the road curves to the left. Continue to follow it until you get to E Brunner Road, then turn right. If you continue straight you will quickly reach US 95 again. Silverwood Theme park is located within sight, and it is great for the family. There is a 3ft. gauge steam train which you can ride too. Anyway after turning onto E. Brunner Road, you will go for almost a mile before crossing the tracks. Take a left right after the tracks, and you should be on E Trent Road. This will follow the tracks all the way to Ramsey with several photo spots along the way. At Ramsey there is a 10,661 foot passing siding with an old signal bridge spanning the west end. There is also a new spur track for loading lumber cars. |
