To see a much more detailed map click here. The map is big, so you may have to scroll around to see all of it. This section of Marshall Canyon is one of the more inaccessible portions of the canyon. There are no roads that access the tracks except for Anderson Rd. But the old BN(SP&S) roadbed has been made into a public bike trail starting at Fish Lake and heading west. This trail provides some very good photographic angles. To get to the trail head and parking lot, look for the signs at Fish Lake. After you park the car start walking or riding west on the trail. After about a mile you will come to the location where the BNSF crosses over the UP line. If you are really lucky you may be able to get an under/over shot. If you follow the tracks west from this bridge you will come to a curve with a lot of deciduous trees which makes for some killer fall shots. Well after you are tired of walking jump back into the car and head to Anderson Rd. From here there is a S-curve to the west and a straight stretch to the left. Westbound are battling upgrade through here, and they just make the whole valley shake especially when it is a loaded grain train. Next go back to Cheney-Spokane Rd and head west. A mile or so down the road you will come to Cheney. When you get to the first stoplight turn left, and you should be on the main drag through town. In Cheney another branch of the PCC interchanges with the BNSF. On most days several PCC engines can be found down in the little yard waiting for the next assignment. In Cheney there are several grain elevators which can be worked into a shot for some variety. This is the end of Marshall Canyon, but if you are wondering where to go from here, check out my Sprague Hill guide which continues west from Cheney following the BNSF.
