To see a much more detailed map click here. The map is big, so you may have to scroll around to see all of it. The UP tracks take off from the BNSF at UP Jct. Although they are separate tracks, the UP and BNSF stay within 1/2 mile of each other all the way to Cheney, WA. A little ways down the track from UP Jct. is Fish Lake. It is here that northbound UP trains wait for a green light and permission to proceed onto BNSF tracks. Also all of the UP tracks are TWC, so if you have a scanner you can easily hear where trains are and when they get their track warrants. Take the road to the left at Fish Lake and park at the parking lot of the Fish Lake trailhead. From here you can walk west on the old BN(SP&S) railroad grade. This is a paved trail, and it follows the UP tracks almost all the way to Cheney. The tracks duck under the BNSF tracks and Anderson Rd. They also slice through the rock in several cuts along the way. Finally about three miles down the trail, the tracks cross over the trail and veer off to the left towards Cheney. If you are not into walking a bunch, you can access the tracks by taking Anderson Rd off of Cheney-Spokane Rd. This crosses the UP tracks and the paved trail within site of the BNSF/UP crossover. Then in Cheney the tracks cross Cheney-Spangle Road just a mere 200 yards from the BNSF crossing of the same road. At Cheney there is a siding where UP can change crews. Often northbound trains do not make it all the way from Hinkle, OR, to Spokane, WA, on there 12 hours of service. From here on the UP tracks take a more southerly direction than the BNSF although they still parallel each other within a few miles. |
