To see a much more detailed map click here. The map is big, so you may have to scroll around to see all of it. To get to the east end of Keystone take exit 231 off of I-90 and head to the south side of the freeway. Then take Danekas Rd east. After 4 miles turn left on Wellsandt and follow that to the tracks. Ok now after you have looked around go back the way you came to exit 231. From here continue west on Danekas Rd until you get to Hill Rd. Take a right and you will be at the tracks. From here you can look east and see the CFI plant and the switch from the main track to the industrial spur. Next just keep heading west on Danekas Rd. This road follows the tracks all the way to Ritzville. Things of interest along the way include Tokio siding and some elevators. Just before you reach Tokio siding take a right on N Snyder Rd. Right after you cross the tracks, you can look east and get a nice shot of westbounds with some grain elevators in the background. Back on Danekas Rd head west. After a few more miles you will come to the Templin elevators at Sage Rd. BNSF built a loop track for loading unit grain trains, and you can find trains parked here waiting to load quite regularly. Now continue on to Ritzville. In town there is an old train station and a caboose on display next to it. There are several short spur and siding tracks in town as well, and sometimes you can find MOW equipment parked there. Also in town, there are several motels, gas stations, and restaurants. Now continue south of town on Danekas Rd again. Then just after you cross I-90 you can take a right on a small paved road. This will take you to a crossing over the tracks which is nice for westbounds in the afternoon. If you continue to follow this road you will go up and over Hwy 395. From this overpass you can look down into Essig siding, and this is a great shot for eastbounds in the early morning. Next head south on 395. There are several interesting shots from 395. The best one is looking back into Essig siding. This is a westbound shot with some very nice S-curves. Be careful about stopping on the highway though, and if you do, make sure to pull well off the road. Take the next exit which to Paha. There is a nice crossing at the west switch of Paha siding, and a couple elevators help spice up your pictures. Now get back on the highway and head south to the next exit which is for Lind, WA. Take a right on SR 21, and you will soon cross the tracks. This is a nice westbound shot late in the day, and you can also shoot an eastbound coming around the curve in the morning. If you continue west on 21 for about a mile, you will come to a little road to the left. Take that road, and you will come to a crossing. You can also follow the tracks back east to where they come under SR 21. Now go back to 21, and head west. Soon you will arrive in Lind where there are several more railroad crossings. There is also gas and a place to eat in the town. |
