To see a much more detailed map click here. The map is big, so you may have to scroll around to see all of it. From Lind continue west on SR 21 for about a mile until you come to an old abandoned bridge. This is the old Milwaukee railroad bridge across the valley. There is a small road just before the bridge that if you turn left, it will take you over to the tracks. There is a nice shot for westbounds late in the day with Lind in the background from the old bridge. After you are done looking around continue west on SR 21. Next turn left on Lind Hatton Rd in about a mile. From here you can look across the valley at the tracks as they climb up the hillside approaching Sand. There isn't any access up to the tracks for the next 5 miles but you can get some nice broadside shots. As you come to the top of the hill you will meet the tracks again. This is Providence, and this is the spot where a lot of people sit and wait for trains. It is two main tracks, so you can get rolling meets. If you climb the hill across the road from the tracks you can get high enough to avoid the telephone lines for a nice westbound shot snaking along the hillside. Or you can just sit right next to the tracks and get nice shots of from both directions. This is a afternoon shot, and it is also one of the few places where you can get a really good shot of an eastbound in the afternoon sun. There is a small BNSF access road that you can follow west along the tracks, and for the time being there isn't a "No Trespassing" sign posted. Now continue west for a little bit, and you will cross the tracks. Looking west you can see the signals and crossovers at Beatrice. There are also two small set-out tracks just west of the crossovers. Just after crossing the tracks turn left on Lauer Rd. From here you can drive up to gain a nice vantage shot of the summit at Providence. Now back at the tracks, you can follow the rails on Damon road which is on the north side of the tracks. It is dirt though, and if you are trying to beat a train anywhere, you can just follow the Lind Hatton road south. If you did the later option turn right on Herman road in about a mile. Continue for another mile and you will again reach the tracks. From here you can get a nice shot of westbounds later in the day. Now turn south on Damon road to keep following the tracks. Beware of the big building on the right since it is a chicken farm, and it really STINKS!! In about a mile you will turn right on Lind Hatton Rd again. Off to the right is the detector at 94.2 which is a nice heads up. In a little bit you will come back down to the tracks. If you turn right on Lee road you can cross the tracks and check the signals for approaching trains. Continue south on the Lind Hatton road for another mile, and you will reach Cunningham. Here you cross the tracks, and then keep following them. From a small hill a little bit south of town you can get a nice shot of the town and a westbound later in the day. Keep following the road for another couple miles and you will reach SR 26. Take a left on this road and you will soon cross the tracks. There is a small turnout on the left just after the bridge where you can park and walk down to the tracks. This is where the two main tracks end. Now go back west and turn left on Lind Hatton Rd. In another couple miles you will reach Hatton. Continue through town and you will cross the tracks again on Garrison. This is a very nice shot for westbounds. |
