To see a much more detailed map click here. The map is big, so you may have to scroll around to see all of it. From Hatton head south on Stephenson Rd then turn left on Garrison. This crossing is a nice spot for westbounds with the town's elevators in the background. From here turn right on Roxboro Rd, and continue for about a mile and a half. From here you can get a really nice shot of eastbounds in the morning and westbounds in the late morning and early afternoon. Continue south for a little bit, and you will find a small dirt road on the right. If you take it you can get down to the tracks for some nice shots in the coulees. There is a "No Trespassing" sign after you get all the way to the tracks, but if you stay up a little on the ridge and don't pass the sign, you will be fine. Next head back and continue south on Roxboro which turns into Hatton Rd. Then turn right on Coyan Rd, and after a mile or so you will reach the tracks again. Here there is a really nice spot for eastbounds in the morning and westbounds later in the day. There is a small BNSF access road to the right and the left, but unfortunately there are "No Trespassing" signs. However if you are up for a hike you can walk along the hillside above the tracks. If you head north you will find several nice S-curves and good shots for eastbounds in the morning and westbounds in the afternoon. If you head south you can find a nice curve where you can actually shoot eastbounds in the afternoon sun and westbounds in the early morning. After you are done exploring continue to head west on Coyan Rd. Continue for a little over a mile until you reach Moon Rd. Take a left and follow this for 4 miles to Hwy 260. On the way you will cross the CBRW tracks, and if you can catch a train heading down to the interchange in the morning this is a nice spot. At 260 turn left and then left again on Clark St. Follow this road through town until you get to the tracks. From here you can see Connell siding and the small interchange yard. If there is a westbound train in the siding you can turn left on Columbia St and drive down to see the train. In town there are several motels as well as places to eat and get some gas. There is even a caboose parked near downtown. Now follow Columbia south until you get to 260. Turn right on Hwy 260 and then left on Fir St. Then take the first right. This will take you over to the tracks, and you can also park here and walk up on the Hwy 260 bridge over the tracks. There is a road that follows the tracks south, but it has several "No Trespassing" signs. Head back to 260 and turn right. Go until you get to 395, and then turn south. Take the next exit which is in about 10 miles at Mesa. Take a right and head into town. Next turn left on Columbia St, and you will cross the tracks. Head north a couple streets to Manton Way, and you will find another crossing. Next continue west on Manton Way which turns into Poe. This turns north and then east to follow the tracks for about 4 miles up to Cactus siding. At Cactus siding the road kind of ends at a rock pit, but if you continue on through, you can get back onto a nice gravel road to keep following the tracks. There are several really nice curves through this area too. Ironically you can actually follow the tracks along this road all the way back up to Connell coming out on the road that said "No Trespassing". I would recommend being cautious because even though the south end doesn't have any "No Trespassing" signs after the gravel pit, it is still the same road. Next head back to Mesa and take the Old State Hwy south of town. This follows the track for a couple miles, and it gives you several more vantage spots for some good pictures. Next either head back to 395 and head south to Eltopia or continue south on Old Sate Hwy. This crosses the tracks, and then turns into Newport Dr. Continue on this for about 2 miles, and then turn left on Langford Rd. Follow this road for five miles until it hits Eltopia West Rd. Take a left and this will take you right into town. At the crossing there is a nice shot for westbounds in the late morning and afternoon. There used to be a nice wooden elevator in town that was great for pictures, but unfortunately they are tearing it down. This seems to be the case in several of these towns which is too bad. When you are at the crossing you are actually about a mile south of the siding of Eltopia. From here it is only another 15 miles south into Pasco on 395. There is a big BNSF hump yard that works almost round the clock. Also Pasco is a large town with anything you need. Well that is the extent of it, and have a great time exploring Providence Hill! |
