To see a much more detailed map click here.  The map is big, so you may have to scroll around to see all of it.

After you are done exploring Fishtrap, head southwest on Brown road following the tracks (this is the same road as the Columbia Basin Hwy just different names).  There are photos to be had in location although most are side views.  But when you can get some of the grazing bison in the foreground it could well be worth it.  Pretty soon you should come to Old State Hwy.  This road ducks under the railroad just a tad bit to the right if you want to check it out.   Head left on this road, and then turn right onto Peterson Rd in about 1/2 mile.  This road crosses the tracks, and from there you can get one of the only good eastbound shots in the late evening.  Also almost all of the land surrounding the tracks in this area (including the two little hills) is public land.  There are fences, but the land is still public.  There is a map near west Fishtrap (across the road from the siding) that shows which land is and isn't.  If you have time and the weather is nice, the view from the hills will make the hike worth it!

Next head back to the Old State Hwy and turn right.  You should come back in sight of the tracks relatively quickly.  Looking off to the right there is a rock pile near the tracks which is a good spot for westbounds throughout most of the day.  In about another mile you should come to Brown road on the right.  This crosses the tracks at Missile Base.  Missile base is just a loop track at a ballast pit where the Lind turn switches cars practically every evening.   Just before Missile Base the tracks take a small curve through some trees, and by walking on the public land next to the tracks you can get some good photos of westbounds.   From here continue on, and the road should parallel the tracks pretty close.   Off to the right in about another mile there is a small hill which gives some added elevation for photos.  Farther down the road, you should see Martin road on the left.  If you take this, it is a short two miles over to the UP tracks.  It crosses just north of Wells siding, and if you are listening to the UP channels and know there is a train, it could easily be worth the quick trip.

On around the corner you will see Sprague in the distance, and there is a little dirt road to the right.  From the crossing you can get some good shots of westbounds coming around the curve downgrade into Sprague.   Continue on, and you will reach Sprague, WA.  There is a gas station in town and several other shops.  Hwy 23 crosses the tracks way up above and photos can be taken from there.  Also it connects to I-90 in less then a 1/2 mile.  After exploring around in town (there are various crossings with some possibilities), head out of town on 1st street.  Following this road you will soon cross the tracks at east Sprague, and from this area you can get good shots of westbounds coming through town with the elevators in the background.  A little farther there is a small dirt road to the left that crosses the tracks and is marked private crossing.  Next you will duck under I-90, and turn left onto Lake Road.  Anywhere in the next 1/2 mile you can find a good spot to pull off and get shots of trains as they pull through Sprague.   On down the road you will go down a small hill, and the road turns to gravel.   From here there is a nice shot to be had of westbounds coming through an S-curve.   This shot does require quite a bit of zoom to get the freeway out of the picture though.

The road veers away from the tracks for a while, but in about two miles take a left on Ghers Rd.  This dead ends at a little campground, but from the bridge over I-90 or the railroad crossing, good shots can be had.   Also if you have a boat and are interested, there is a boat ramp where you can put your boat into Sprague lake.  From the lake you can get some pretty interesting shots as the railroad follows the lake for about two miles and is not accessible any other way unless you are interesting in hiking.  After that head back to Lake road and take a left.   Follow it for almost 5 miles, and you will come back to the tracks at the east switch of Keystone (note that the road changes names in the process, but if you follow the same road and don't turn off from it, you will be fine).  From here you can see way down the tracks to the west and a good ways to the east too.  There is a grain elevator which you could probably work into the shot, but the tracks are straight in this portion and the scenery has changed to mostly dried grass and scrub brush.  That is the end of the line that is covered in this guide.  You can get back multiple ways.  Either backtrack or keep following the road.  If you keep following the road, it T's into Danekas Rd.  You can either turn right and go to Tokio exit to get onto I-90, or turn left and it will take you back to Sprague around the other side of the lake.  If you would like to continue following the BNSF tracks west, then check out my Providence Hill Guide which extends from Keystone almost down to Pasco.   Well that is it so I hope you have fun exploring the Lakeside sub around Sprague Hill!
