My dad and I decided to try out our new scanner around the Marshall area on August 16, 2002. We left around 8:30am from our wheatfield home in Spangle, WA, and headed to Marshall. Our first train was a short (27 cars) UP manifest and vehicle Eastbound (UP 9209, 8119, 4385). We saw it originally in Marshall and chased it almost to Spokane where we got a picture of it (my dad also vided). Then we heard about 2 westbounds to Seattle so we left to go see them. As so as be arrived one went through but we werent ready for it (BNSF 4779, 5233, BN 7285). We then heard over the scanner that the 1st one had already gone through before we got there. After that we drove to Scribner to wait for a train. The next train that showed up was a Eastbound stack, TOFC and vehicle (77 cars and BNSF 5370, 712). We got pictures and video of it from across the valley at Scribner but decided against chasing it. An hour and 15 minutes later a UP Westbound with 53 cars of manifest came through (UP 6553, 2295 (SD60M)). On the scanner we heard that there would be a BNSF manifest following the UP and sure enough a couple of minutes later BNSF 5248, 6739 CSX 8860 (ex-CR) and BN 7873 came into sight with 120 cars. We got some good photo and video footage of both of the westbounds and then headed home.
