On February My mom and I left home and headed out to Spokane, WA to catch some trains. On the way we dropped my brother off at a friend's. At Costco we bought some new batteries for my scanner and then continued on to Yardley. There we found a westbound stack and vehicle (SF(BNSF) 8250, BN 6927) starting to pull out. I had seen a picture taken from a spot near the Latah Jct. but had never taken one from there myself so we headed to the spot. Arriving at 12:10pm we waited momentarily before the train arrived. It took the Pasco leg of the wye at Latah Jct. and soon was out of sight. On the scanner we heard of another westbound so we waited. At 12:40pm CP 9565 finally appeared leading a UP manifest with CP 8516, UP 9311 and 9488 as the other units. After this train had disappeared we walked back to our car and drove over to Empire Siding where an eastbound coal empties was stopped. After taking pictures of it (BNSF 9506, 9733, 8252, 7308) we headed back to Yardley. In Yardley a westbound was about ready to depart (BNSF 5320, 721, 1018) with a long string of manifest. Also in the yard was a manifest ready to depart for the Kettle Falls branch with 10 units (BN(BNSF) 2735, 2929, 2075, 2887, 2871, 2742, 2079 BNSF 2265, 2094, 2371). In Yardley there was an assortment of power including BNSF 3646(RC equipped) and BNSF 516 which was in desperate need of a paint job. We then headed over to the UP yard where we found a westbound manifest almost ready to depart (UP 559,554, 1040, 544(all GP38-2s)) . Back at Yardley an eastbound vehicle train (BN(BNSF) 6821, 7151, BNSF 6700, 4154) stopped to recrew at 2:15pm before continuing on. We then stopped at a Krispy Kremes for some doughnuts and on the way saw UP 1207(GP38-2). Then back in Yardley there was an eastbound TOFC (BNSF 4921, 4944) in the yard. We then headed for home and saw our last train stopped at a signal in downtown Spokane. It was a UP train (CP 9553, UP 7577) headed for the Canadian border with manifest. It was a great day overall with the sun shining and blue sky overhead for most of the day. I had heard about a westbound coal but didn't see it although I am glad that I saw the empties. More pictures are posted in the BNSF and UP photo archives. I can't wait to do it again.
